Pilot Killed in Single-Engine Plane Crash in Madison County

MADISON COUNTY, Ind. — A pilot has died after a single-engine plane crashed Tuesday afternoon just north of Anderson, according to the Madison County Sheriff’s Department.

Authorities were called to the scene around 12:30 p.m. at 4261 North County Road 100 West, where emergency crews found the wreckage of the small aircraft.

The Madison County Coroner confirmed the crash was fatal and involved the plane’s sole occupant. Officials said the aircraft had been traveling from Rensselaer to Anderson when it went down.

Deputies, along with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), are investigating the cause of the crash.

No other injuries were reported, and authorities asked residents to avoid the area while investigators processed the scene.

This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

Deputies found the plane, on fire, had struck a tree.

The Madison County Sheriff’s Department said preliminary evidence suggests the plane made several brief attempts to touch down in a nearby field before it struck a tree at ground level and caught fire.

Officials confirmed that the Anderson Airport Tower had been in contact with the pilot shortly before the crash. However, no signs of distress or mechanical issues were reported during that final communication.

Both the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) have been notified and will oversee the investigation. The crash site remains secured as local and federal authorities work to determine what led to the fatal incident.
